The Lodge

  • Outside one of the cottagesWe feel that Bardia Eco Lodge has one of the very best locations of all the park's lodges, as we are situated right next to a beautiful tributary of the Karnali river, directly opposite the park itself. The dining hall and cottages sit within natural gardens with a variety of shade trees, fruit trees and flowering bushes and plants. We are very close to the park entrance, making the return from long jungle walks quick and easy. The dining hall is perfectly positioned to watch the Park animals come to drink in the river, and it is common to see the local monkey troop playing at the waters edge, while deer and wild elephant also come to drink. The bird watching in and around the lodge is also very good.

Dining in the main hallWe offer simple but comfortable accommodation in a relaxed and natural environment. All the necessary amenities you would expect are provided, but delivered in a sustainable eco-friendly way. The cottages are warm and comfortable, and are made of sustainable locally supplied materials in the traditional Tharu style by members of the local community

Our staff are friendly and helpful, and always eager to assist. All we ask from you is that you respect the wildlife and environment around you and thoroughly enjoy your time staying with us.

    Our Eco Objectives

The main aim for this development was to create a comfortable eco-friendly lodge to enable tourists to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Bardia National Park, to strive to be carbon neutral, and to support the local community.

Our aims for the lodge include:

    Minimise Impact
To minimise the negative consequences of tourism on the environment through the use of recyclable and renewable resources, and through taking great care with all types of waste generated on site.

    Build environmental awareness
To educate both tourists and residents of the local Tharu community in the importance of respecting the local environment and eco-systems, and to provide examples of eco-friendly systems and techniques not currently used in the area.

Provide direct financial benefits for conservation
To help fund environmental protection, research and education and to support the conservation works carried out by the National Park management team.

Provide financial benefits to the local community
Including providing support for potable water, roads, health clinics, as well as providing direct employment for local people.

    Respect local culture
To help educate travellers about local customs, dress codes and social norms.

    Customer Satisfaction
To ensure our guests thoroughly enjoy their time while staying in our lodge and exploring the park. Also to afford our guests opportunities to meet and learn about the local community and to provide insights through information and excellent guides into the diversity of flora and fauna within the park itself.

Construction of the Lodge - 'completed'

It's taken several years, lots of head scratching and hard work from a lot of people to get the lodge this far, but we are now delighted to be able to offer comfortable accommodation in an idyllic setting, and to have achieved most of our targets for the eco-friendly nature of the lodge.

    In the beginning

The home below was disused and uninhabited. We purchased several buildings like this from the local community and re-used the materials in the construction of the lodge.

    Derelict house to be recycled

We exclusively used local labour and skills. Some of the local carpenters were among the most resourceful tradesmen we have ever encountered.
